JOB Description for System Administrator

The System Administrator takes care of the user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations. They offer technical support and troubleshoot any hardware and software problems related to server and storage devices. The professional will handle issues concerning application and database server operations. They do thorough research on upcoming products, service protocols, and standards in support of systems software procurement and development efforts. Additional IT system administrator requirements include the following:

  • Installing, configuring, and maintaining servers and networks;
  • Overseeing system performance and troubleshooting issues;
  • Creating a backup and safeguarding the data if there are any hindrances;
  • Performing system upgrades following new releases;;
  • Maintaining internal documentation through Wiki;
  • Performing account setup;
  • Sustaining network integrity, server deployment, and security;

  • Monitoring and maintaining network servers such as file servers, VPN gateways, and intrusion detection systems; and

  • Ensuring high-level security and efficiency resulting in 100% output.

  • Maintaining the assets inventory

Linux Administrator duties and responsibilities

  • Proactively maintain and develop all Linux infrastructure technology to maintain a 24x7x365 uptime service
  • Engineering of systems administration-related solutions for various project and operational needs
  • Maintain best practices for managing systems and services across all environments
  • Fault finding, analysis, and logging information for reporting performance exceptions
  • Proactively monitoring system performance and capacity planning
  • Manage, coordinate, and implement software upgrades, patches, and hotfixes on servers, workstations, and network hardware
  • Create and modify scripts or applications to perform tasks
  • Provide input on ways to improve the stability, security, efficiency, and scalability of the environment
  • Collaborate with other teams and team members to develop automation strategies and deployment processes

Linux Administrator duties and responsibilities

  • Previous working experience as a Linux Administrator for 2-3 years (s)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a similar relevant degree 
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux: RedHat, CentOS, Debian, etc.
  • Hands-on experience with MySQL and/or MariaDB
  • Familiarity with VMWare and SAN management and concepts
  • Expert in Shell, Perl, and/or Python scripting
  • Solid knowledge of protocols such as DNS, HTTP, LDAP, SMTP, and SNMP
  • Additional Linux certifications (RHCT, RHCE, and LPIC) will be considered an advantage
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
